Shop Description

The woodworking shop consists of two large work areas. Among the major tools in the east, or main, shop are two 10” table saws, both of which have extended tables and outfeed support. Other major stationary tools include two 6” jointers, two wood lathes, a router table, three drill presses, a combination 12” disc/6” belt pedestal sander, a spindle sander, a 12” thickness planer, a 22”/44” drum sander, a 12” sliding compound miter saw w/work station and three bandsaws. The bandsaws include two 14” saws as well as a 20” bandsaw that is used primarily for resaw work. There are two 54” x 56” work benches with vises and two 25” x 8’ work benches with vises that have adjustable legs to allow the tables to be dropped from their normal 36” height to a 30” height for times when we have younger woodworkers in the shop. The final major tool in the east shop is a CNC router.

The east shop has a sanding and assembly area that has a gluing/clamping table and a shop-made sanding table. Benchtop tools such as a scroll saw, small disc/belt sanders, a spindle sander, a Kreg pocket hole machine and a mortising machine are located on the benches that line the east and west walls of the room. Clamp storage is located behind the clamping or gluing table.

The west shop has a 10” table saw with an extended table as well as a large multi-purpose outfeed table. Other stationary tools include a 12” thickness planer, a 25” molder/planer, a 6” jointer, a 12” drill press and a 22”/44” drum sander. Shop-built dust collection systems are in use in both shops. Compressed air lines have been run through both shops to allow the use of pneumatic tools.

Two smaller rooms are located in the west shop. One serves as a library/break/meeting room and the other is currently used as finish room. Multiple lumber storage racks have been built in the west shop. A security system has been installed to keep a watchful eye over the equipment and activities that occur in the shop. The system also has a direct connection to law enforcement as well as to the local hospital. The system alerts the EMT’s directly to provide for the quickest response possible should a serious accident occur.
